Neuwirth –UCLA Buddy Day
The concept behind buddy day is that our High school students got to pair up with college students and see what "A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A BRUIN " is like.
The Neuwirth counseling team coordinated with current UCLA students from various organizations - Such as: Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority Inc. Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity Inc., Mecha,Community programs office and the Vice Provost Initiative for Pre-college scholars to make the event happen.
Students started their day by meeting their buddies. Then they went to a Lecture class where they got to sit in class and learn like a college student. Boxers participated in a Chicano 10 course ; Intro to Chem, Calculus , Spanish Lit. and many other classes. They also got to participate in student on campus events such as "being part of a fundraiser and selling tortas". What ever their buddy had to do on Wednesday Nov. 18th they did !
In the later half of the day they had a panel hosted at the UCLA tennis Center -where they talked to students about transition into college from high school ; how to handle culture shock; peer pressure; interacting with people different from them; networking; advice on how to prepare themselves for college and time management.
Following the panel they par took in a door tour and visited UCLA Reiber hall. Getting a little taste of the type of place they might live in as a college student. Finally they got to eat at UCLA Covel dinning hall with Neuwirth Alumni who are current UCLA students.
The students selected for this trip had to answer seven short answer questions and meet all deadlines . Students were invited from 9th -11th grade. Close to 100 students applied and 45 students were selected to participate in this special UCLA buddy day experience.
The Neuwirth counseling team hopes to continue to build relationships with various colleges and supporters so that our Buddy Day model can give our students the inside look to what college is like at campuses in California and all over the nation.
